About Phlebotomy

What is it?

Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood, and is an important tool for diagnosing medical conditions. Patients more commonly know it as a blood test, with the drawing of the blood conducted by a Phlebotomist, and the testing comes afterwards, conducted by someone else.

What happens?

Patients are instructed to sit or lie down, and will be asked to make a fist. A tourniquet will be tied around the arm to help make the veins pop more, and to make it easier for the Phlebotomist to insert the needle into the arm. Although the insertion of the needle and taking blood may be a little uncomfortable, it shouldn’t cause you any pain.
